There are a possibility of three base sizes. The smallest base is often used on chandeliers. If the fixture is unpluged, you little finger should not fit into the socket or if you have small fingers, it will still be pretty snug. The intermediate base is about 1/2 inch diameter and your finger should fit almost perfectly. The standard base is what you would find on a normal bulb that you would screw into a standard lamp.
Depending on your lighting needs, the fixture should be able to take a 75 watt bulb without any problem if the bulb sits in an upright position. 60 watts if it hangs down, meaning the metal base of the bulb is above the glass of the bulb.
